Diploma of Local Government Management

Course Overview

The Diploma of Local Government Management is designed to build the knowledge and practical skills required for effective leadership and administration at the local level of government. The program equips participants with competencies in governance and administration, local government law, budgeting and financial management, development planning, and project management.

The program also covers key areas such as disaster management, land administration, village court administration, gender and development, sustainable development, and small business development, ensuring graduates can address complex community and development challenges.

Participants develop strong leadership, supervisory, conflict resolution, research, communication, and computer application skills, while promoting public service values, diversity, workplace safety, and legislative compliance. Graduates are prepared to support accountable, inclusive, and effective service delivery within local government systems.

Entry Requirements

  1. Those who are interested to undertake this are serving government officers who have many years of experience within their respective department, provincial administrations and state entities, or they have completed other basic training in other areas.
  2. National Certificate 4 in Government (Leadership and Management)
  3. Senior Managers with more than 5 years’ work experience.

Pathways

Upon attaining this qualification, the participants are able to pursue further studies to take up the following program:

  1. National Certificate IV in Government (Leadership & Management)
  2. Advanced Diploma of Government (Leadership and Management)
  3. Executive Diploma in Leadership and Management
  4. Higher education professional studies in UPNG or SILAG
